A bulldog puppy born without a butt makes a miraculous recovery after life-saving surgery

Luckily the pup lived up to her name as vets performed life-saving surgery to give her a proper tummy.

The five-month-old bulldog was born with Atresia ani type 3, a rare birth defect that means she had no anus.

Her worried owners noticed she was struggling and took her to a vet who referred her to specialists at Linnaeus-owned West Midlands Veterinary Referrals (WMR), near Burton-on-Trent, Staffs.

This summer she underwent complex surgery to build a new skirt from scratch.

Dr Chris Lancelott, who led Lucky’s treatment, said: ‘Lucky was actually unfortunately born with a birth defect which meant she had no anus.

“It was a severe case of a condition we call ‘Atresia ani type 3 and rectovaginal fistula.’

“In layman’s terms, I had to create an anus, reposition the rectum, and connect the intestine to this new anus.

“Surgery is challenging in these cases as type 3 atresia means the blocked bowel is too far from where the anus should be.

“First, we removed the fistula (abnormal internal passageway) and then carefully cut the rectum to mobilize it.”

After the three-hour operation, Lucky spent a week recovering and learning to calm down.

Lucky is now back at her home in Rugeley, Staffs., where she is continuing her recovery.

Her owner Frances Silk said: “We realized within the first week of Lucky’s birth that she was not ‘hydraulic’ properly and, as a result, she was suffering from water infections and constipation.

“Our local vets suggested we try to get her to between eight and 12 weeks, when she might be old enough to have surgery.

“After a thorough investigation and detailed discussions, we decided to proceed with surgery to correct her problems.

“The operation went well and three months later, Lucky is slowly going from strength to strength.

“After several months of being fed a liquid diet, she is now able to eat kibble just like her mother.”
